Short Bio

Hi! My name is Stephanie Christine Winkler, and I am a lecturer at the Department for Security, Strategy and Leadership at the Swedish Defense University in Stockholm. I am also affiliated with the Asia Programme of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs. I defended my PhD dissertation "Conceptual Politics in Practice: How Soft Power Changed the World" in December 2020. The dissertation has received the prize for the best dissertation in the Social Sciences at Stockholm University defended in 2020. My main research interest lies in International Relations Theory and especially the role of concepts in academic and political life. Empirically, I focus on the international relations of the United States, China and Japan as well as the soft power concept.

Starting in July 2022, I will be a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Economic History and International Relations at Stockholm University and the Lau China Centre at King's College London. I will be working on the project 'Analogy Change in International Relations: The Case of the Return of the Cold War and the future of US-China relations' which has received 3.7 million SEK funding from the Swedish Research Council (International Postdoc). I have been teaching on both undergraduate and graduate levels on International Relations broadly and East Asia specifically, and am also currently supervising several master students.

Please take a look around here, and let me know if you have any questions!

Note: I am currently on parental leave and might be a little slower in responding to inquiries.
