Short Bio

Hi! My name is Stephanie Christine Winkler, and I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Economic History and International Relations at Stockholm University, and at the Institute of Political Science at Frankfurt University. I am also affiliated with the Asia Programme of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs. My main research interest lies in International Relations Theory, the use of historical analogies in international politics as well as the role of concepts in academic and political life. Empirically, I focus on the international relations of the United States, China and Japan, the Cold War as well as the soft power concept.

I defended my PhD dissertation "Conceptual Politics in Practice: How Soft Power Changed the World" in December 2020. The dissertation has received the prize for the best dissertation in the Social Sciences at Stockholm University defended in 2020. Since July 2022, I have been working on a new project 'Analogy Change in International Relations: The Case of the Return of the Cold War and the future of US-China relations' which is funded by the Swedish Research Council. I have been teaching and supervising on both undergraduate and graduate levels on International Relations broadly and East Asia.
